Actinolite

Actinolite (Amiant)

Specimens with this hairy mineral stand out in any collection. The fine fibres are often referred to by the formerly more common name amiant (or more rarely byssolite). Amiant can both enclose quartz and be enclosed by it. Epidote is also a frequent companion. Amiant is actually whitish, but is often coloured green by chlorite or yellow by iron hydroxide (limonite). Lying, asbestiform actinolite is also called mountain leather.
