Haematite

Pure haematite consists of almost 70% pure iron and is thus a high-grade iron ore. In fact, dense haematite ore was mined in Gonzen near Sargans until 1966. However, hematite in the form of iron roses is of particular interest to prospectors and collectors. Compact iron roses are formed by six-sided, thick tabular crystals. In flaked iron roses, the haematite plates are thinner.

The highly lustrous haematite slabs with epitaxially grown rutile needles from the Cavradi Gorge in the front Val Curnera are also in great demand.
